This Girl is On Fire

Alicia Keys is the female Bruno Mars. Beautiful voice, great melodies… moronic lyrics. Her new song This Girl is On Fire is a classic example of how to murder a metaphor:

This girl is on fiyaaaaah

Doing fine so far- this girl is clearly doing something awesome or she’s really angry. Here’s where it goes wrong:

She’s walking on fiyaaah

OH SHIT. I thought this was a metaphor, but plainly this woman is in an actual, physical place that is on fire. And it’s spread to whatever she’s wearing. PUT THE FIRE OUT AND SAVE THIS POOR WOMAN.

  1. I looked up the lyrics on-line. The “girl” is actually some kind of fire starter / being of flame.

Everybody stands, as she goes by
Cause they can see the flame that’s in her eyes
Watch her when she’s lighting up the night”

Flame in her eyes…lights up the night… clearly a being of pure flame…

  2. You’re right, she also says-

Looks like a girl, but she’s a flame

But she also says “the world is one fire” and also, “she’s got her feet on the ground, and she’s burning it down.” She’s burning the ground down?

  3. I feel like everything Alicia Keys does just misses the mark. The lyrics in most of her songs are really cliched yet somehow literal, and then she performs them with such passion that it makes you wonder if that is just as deep as she can go. Maybe there’s no there, there.

    1. It’s a shame, because she sings so well, she should just hire someone to write lyrics. Hers are bad. If you listen to this song, every line is like this. They don’t even make sense, all they do is rhyme.
